Sauro Sandroni, knifemaker in Tuscany, Italy.
“A man without a knife is a man without a life.”
– Faroese proverb
A few years ago, for some people, leaving the house without having their knife with them would have been unthinkable, like thinking about doing it barefoot. For someone, today it’s the same.
At my place, in the countryside, there is a saying: there’s no day when a man does not need to tie, light or cut. A truth for anyone who lived in the countryside, man or woman, old or young. My grandparents, a farmer and a lumberjack, faced everyday works with a little string, matches and, of course, a knife in their pockets.
“The knife is the balance point for survival in the bush. Without it, you have to stay on the move. With it, you create the opportunity to rest.”
– Mors Kochanski
My work is aimed at those who, in the 21st Century, continue to regard the knife as something essential. A tool of work and recreation, something which mere presence gives security in dealing with nature, its mountains and its forests.
The knives I build say a lot about me; the knife you choose says something about who you are.
